Video short film "Luminaris" directed by Juan Pablo Zaramella

Luminaris is a multi-award winning animated short film made using the pixilation technique, combining real actors interacting with animated objects and time-lapse sequences. The film tells the story of a man living in a world controlled and timed by light. Every morning, the inhabitants of that world are woken up and pulled to their jobs by sunlight, as if this was some sort of magnet. The main character has a routinary job in a factory that makes electric bulbs. But he has something else in mind that could change the order of things. The film was inspired by an instrumental tango piece called "Lluvia de Estrellas" (Star Rain) composed by Osmar Maderna in the forties.

Director Juan Pablo Zaramella explains, "I first became acquainted with this piece of music as a child, because my elders used to listen to it. I had always liked this piece but, as an adult, it gradually dawned on me that this music could be like a score of a film that had never been made. In 2008 I was granted a creativity residency by Abbaye de Fontevraud, in France. I decided to take this opportunity to develop this project. Orginally, I approached the project as a puppet animation story, but doing some pixilation tests in the gardens of Fontevraud, just for fun, the seed of the present short appeared: the idea of sunlight as a magnetic force."

The complete production of the film took two years and a half, mainly due to the unpredictability of weather conditions and sunlight movement, that changes the shadows on the locations every day.

"Both the speed and the intensity of sunlight changed during the shooting of a take, so we had to modify the time-lapse frequency and the exposure of the photographs all the time", explains Sergio Piñeyro, director of photography.

"In a world controlled and timed by light, an ordinary man has a plan that could
change the natural order of things."

Video short animated film "iO" directed by James Swindells, Robert Nelson and Alexander Ward

Watch "iO" a 3 minute animated story of a dark metropolis that has enslaved an entity of limitless energy, which resides in the belly of gigantic robot. The city's excessive need for energy is pushing their resource to its limit, and the entity is not content with how this city is abusing its power. (YouTube link)

"Taking a theme that is very relevant in today's age, we chose to expand the idea of a nation abusing its energy resource. We wanted to give character to not only to the city, but to the energy that they are using to power their wasteful metropolis. We believed we could show the torment the energy was enduring through the persona of this robot. There was a heavy theme of contrast running through the film, from the heavy use of black and white. The masculinity of the robot, until where it is reborn as it's feminine counterpart, and finally to the abundance of light at the start - to it's final crescendo into darkness at the end."

Video short film "Fracking Explained: Opportunity or Danger" / "Fracking Erkärt: Chance oder Risiko" by Kurzgesagt

Watch "Fracking Explained: opportunity or danger" (5 minutes) "Fracking is a controversial topic. On the one side the gas drilling companies, on the other side citizens opposed to this drilling method. Politicians are divided on the matter. We try to take a neutral look at fracking. It is relevant for all of us, because of high prices for energy and the danger for our drinking water. This video focuses mostly on the debate currently ongoing in Europe. In a lot of European countries there is a public outcry against fracking, especially in Germany. But the facts in this video are relevant to all of us." - filmmaker's description ( Vimeo hi res )

Video short films "Caretakers & Warriors" and "This Barn" communities in Nebraska and Alberta fight back, against the Keystone Pipeline

Watch "Caretakers & Warriors"  (7:40 minutes) frontline communities of families, farmers, ranchers and Native leadership in Nebraska and Alberta, share their opinion and personal direct experience with the Keystone Pipeline and Tar Sands Oil. They say, "it is not a political issue, but a human issue ...  health issue ... life issue ... our planet's health ... our children's health ... animal and plant health ... water health ... and our future generations' health and right of just being able to live on the land, and have healthy usable air, water, soil and food."

Watch "This Barn" (2:20) citizens of Nebraska join hands community by community and fight back against the Keystone Pipeline by building sustainable energy projects along the way of, blocking, the Keystone pipeline route.

Video description by NEXTGEN CLIMATE
"The people pushing for approval of Keystone XL argue that running this tar sands pipeline from Canada to the Gulf is a net positive for America, that it will create jobs and make our country more energy independent. This argument could not be further from the truth. And you don’t have to take our word for it. We went to the source and talked to those who would be most directly affected by the pipeline’s construction. We spoke with members of the First Nations tribes, whose way of life is threatened by the tar sands extraction process. We talked to American families who live along the pipeline’s proposed path. These are the communities that will be most adversely affected by this 1,179 mile long dirty-oil superhighway for foreign oil markets. More than anyone else, they understand what’s at stake."

Video short film "Shield The People - Oyate Wahacanka" (2014 Message To People of the World

Watch "Shield The People - Oyate Wahacanka" (YouTube) (6:48) "Can a Tipi Stop a Pipeline?
Keystone Tar Sands / XL Pipeline. Nearly everyone is familiar with these words and most have at least some opinion about what they represent. Those who are willing to sacrifice the very things which make life possible on this planet for personal gain, they mean fabulous wealth and power. For some, they only mean possibly saving a few cents at the gas pump. For others, who have studied the short and long term effects of what these words represent, a far more grim reality becomes apparent.

The most reputable scientists from all over the world have made their findings on these projects known to the governments of the United States, Canada, the United Nations and this research is in agreement with the beliefs and ancient knowledge of the First Nations people of the American continents; we are putting the ability for living organisms to survive on this planet at grave risk! The indigenous peoples have long understood the relationship of man and nature. Ironically, it is these very people who now bear the initial brunt and negative effects of these projects.

Having been relegated to so called “Sacrifice Zones”, lands and rights under treaty with federal governments have been discarded. So have the health and safety of the men, women, and children living in these areas been ravaged and discarded for corporate and political greed. Now, the people of the First Nations are organizing to protect and shield the people, natural resources and cultural heritage from the devastation, knowing that it is not only their small corner of the world they are protecting, but the very survival of the entire living organism that is Mother Earth. Resistance to this threat is underway. These are surely as important as those in other parts of the world, of which the recent destruction has caused alarm and outrage all over the globe. Our government spends millions of dollars to protect cultural sites in other countries we occupy, while it issues permits for the destruction of similar sites in the heartland of America for corporate profit.
